It was the greatest day in Fiji’s sports history: On August 11th 2016, the Fiji National Team beat Great Britain to become the first ever Rugby 7s Olympic champion. The first ever Olympic medal for Fiji cemented Rugby 7s as the nation’s top sport and even led to the introduction of an official $7 note.
The victory in Rio was the biggest but by far not the only success of the Fiji side. They have won a record 18 times at the Hong Kong Sevens, the world’s most prestigious yearly tournament. In the 18 years of the World Rugby Sevens Series, Fiji has never ranked worse than fourth in the final standings. In 2019, the Fijians will try to add an Oktoberfest 7s title to their impressive collection.
